Matt Fitzpatrick leads the list of big names returning home early from the Valspar Championship

The Valspar Championship at Innsbrook’s Copperhead course in Palm Harbor, Fla., already lacked a host of stars due to its spot on the PGA Tour schedule (four of the five pre-Valspar events were designated, with another coming next week). week).

And after the cut was made on Friday, some of the stars who played didn’t play well enough to earn a Saturday tee time.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who has struggled with his game for much of 2023, tops the list. The 13th ranked player in the world is on the field for next week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas.

Here are some of the names that missed out on the 1 out of 143 cut at the Valspar Championship.

The Englishman’s week was ruined early Thursday morning when he made a nine at third par 4. He bogeyed nos 3 and 5, too, before playing his rear nine at 3-under for a 3-over 74.

His even effort on Friday morning was not enough to recover and he headed home early.

The Canadian got off to a great start Thursday, opening with a 2-under 69. Thanks to a triple bogey and a double bogey on Friday, however, Hadwin stumbled to 76, 5-for-5, in the second round.

Kiz played well on Friday, posting a 1-under 70. However, he wasn’t enough to recover from a 6-for-7 opening 77 that included eight bogeys. The fan favorite has now missed the cut in four of his last five starts.

Harry Higgs (over 9)

Higgs played very well on Thursday, posting a 1 under 70. Friday, however, was a different story.

Not only did he hit back-to-back double bogeys at numbers 7 and 8 (his 16 and 17), but he stumbled into an eight at the par-3 13. Higgs failed to break 80, posting a 10-of-81 in round two.

Two weeks after finishing T-7 at the Puerto Rico Open (an opposite-court event), Higgs leaves the Tampa area early.

The 2023 United States Ryder Cup captain did not have his game this week, posting rounds of 74-78 to deliver a two-day total of 10 more.
